Our VISION is to be a ministry of spiritual transformation at the heart of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota.
Our MISSION is
– assisting in the ongoing work of discerning God’s voice, both within ourselves and in the world
– providing guidance in the search for wisdom
– teaching forms of contemplative prayer
– offering training in the inner work of the spiritual life
RATIONALE: Our Scriptures tell us, humanity has been created in “God’s image.” The ongoing work of the Christian is, then, a spiritual revolution which involves detaching from the false illusions of “self,” in order to take hold of the new, True Self, that has been created in God’s likeness. Recognizing that the wisdom of recreation through spiritual transformation is often lost to our cultures and societies, we believe it is the vocation of the House of Prayer to support individuals and groups as they seek to be “formed into Christ” (Galatians 4:19).
The House of Prayer is a retreat space and contemplative ministry of spiritual transformation.
The Episcopal House of Prayer retreat space was built in 1990, the result of a collaborative effort between the Episcopal Church of Minnesota and Saint John’s Abbey. It is on five acres on the grounds of Saint John’s Abbey and University and is a subsidiary of the Episcopal Church of Minnesota. As an independent non-profit, it does not receive financial support from either the Abbey or Episcopal Diocese.
In addition to our 13 retreat rooms (9 singles, 4 doubles), an Oratory was built in 2001. This unique space, designed in the tradition of Native American hogans, is particularly suited for contemplative prayer.
Our retreat space is available for use by groups as a retreat or meeting space. To learn more about our facilities, click here.
We sponsor a number of programs throughout the year in our retreat space in Collegeville and at the House of Prayer in the City, a second location next to St. Mark’s Cathedral in Minneapolis. Our programs are grounded in the practice of Christian contemplative prayer
